Not everyone is a seasoned car connoisseur with a fully-stocked garage. We all start from somewhere, and when it comes to purchasing timeless vehicles, it’s helpful to get a sense of what models are most common. Here are a few that entry-level collectors should keep in mind.
The Mustang is without question one of the most iconic and timeless vehicles ever made, with a tenure spanning all the way from 1962 to the present day. It’s more than a car, forming an unforgettable part of North American culture. Not all Mustangs, however, are generally considered classic collectibles. A good range to focus on would be those released between 1964 and 1973. This was the first generation produced, and it has all the unmistakable visual hallmarks of an old-school Mustang. They’re quite popular and not hard to come by, so when you’re on the hunt make sure to inspect thoroughly for wear and tear.
Between 1959 and 1987, Chevrolet produced what is perhaps the world’s most handsome coupé utility, the El Camino. The third generation, produced between 1968 and 1972, could be a good place to start for new collectors. At the meeting point between rugged pickup and sleek muscle car, this was a true workhorse that could deliver on its promise to offer both style and utility. Bearing this in mind, however, it’s especially important to look out for body damage and rust when purchasing yours. If you’re looking for a collector vehicle that is equipped with a rear tray and also boasts a historically classic look, this may be the one.
Why not take a detour from the Americas to a land known across the world for its precision automotive engineering? Without the 2002, released from 1966 to 1977, BMW may not have become the international household name of sports and luxury vehicles that it is today. It’s currently one of the most popular collector cars on the market, and while not too difficult to procure, they may lean on the pricier side given their desirability and the long-term cost of parts and maintenance. Nevertheless, they’re one of the most well-built and reliable classic BMWs, and well worth hunting down if you’re partial to this particular name.
