Storing Classic Cars During Winter

Storing Classic Cars During Winter - Lift King - Automotive Lift Calgary

There’s nothing quite like a leisurely summer drive in your favourite classic car. Winter, on the other hand, is a different story. You may not want to flaunt that prized ride when road conditions get nasty this time of year. Let’s see if you’re up to speed on proper winter storage practices.

Why Store It?

There are many car lovers out there who simply adore their prized vehicles too much to put them through the harsh, dirty conditions of winter. If you’re one of them, you’ve got your head in the right place. Everything from mud to road salt and various forms of unfriendly moisture threaten to take a toll on the condition of a great-looking vehicle. Corrosion can get out of hand in places that are hard to spot, and the effects of heavy winter weather on the mechanical aspects of a car are considerable. If you’ve invested in restoring an older classic, the last thing you want to do is compromise it all.

Main Considerations

There are a number of storage steps that some drivers consider to be a good idea. In addition to giving it a proper wash and wax, it’s good practice to check the antifreeze, change the oil and filter, and fill the gas tank with both fuel and fuel stabilizer. Run the engine for a bit so that the stabilizer can get through the system, and make sure your tires are filled with the right amount of air. Some people may want to remove their battery and store it separately as well. If you’re concerned about vermin, don’t forget to cover the air inlet and exhaust pipes. Exact techniques will vary, but these should give you a rough idea of what to consider.

What About the Lift?

If you own more than one vehicle that deserves wintertime protection, you might run into a problem of space when fitting them into your garage for safekeeping. Unless, that is, you’ve invested in a high quality residential automotive lift. Making room to store other items is usually a good move during this season. Not only does a lift help in terms of space, but elevating your classic car can prevent flat spots from developing in the tires over time, not to mention make it harder for vermin to poke around where they shouldn’t be!

The Lift King team prides itself in having all the bases covered when it comes to maintenance and storage lifts. Whatever your reasons for needing one, you can be sure that we’ll be able to set you up with a unit that’s built to last. Give us a call at (403) 283-1020 to find yours today!
